Intrinsic Takes Out 32Red Cup

Intrinsic proved he was the right fit for the 32Red Stewards’ Cup on Saturday at Goodwood. With a maximum field size of 28, but an entry list of 109 runners as late as last Tuesday, there was a chance Intrinsic would be bumped, just as he was from the Wokingham Stakes in June. But he managed to squeeze into the race, and ultimately took out the win.

Intrinsic was a safe bet from the outset and travelled well throughout. There was a scare in the closing stages, as Richard Hughes had to correct his mount after drifting badly left, but still managed to cross the line more than a length ahead of the remaining runners.

Favourite backers suffered disappointment as Muthmir faded into fifth place in the last furlong and couldn’t finish any higher across the line. Ninjago finished second, 1 length behind Intrinsic, Alben Star came in third, and Ruwaiyan fourth.

Dane O’Neill thought the draw played against favourite Muthmir and said: “We didn’t get a very good draw. We were out wide, and I would have liked a bit of a stronger pace. As for where next, we’re just deciding whether to go five or six furlongs with him.”

But ultimately, the best horse won. Hughes, Intrinsic’s jockey, said after the race: “I’m riding a Group horse in a handicap. He idled in front but he is a very good horse. I always thought he was a certainty for the last couple of days.

“He has so much quality this horse. He shuffled down the hill a bit but he travelled so well. I hope he is a Group 1 horse for [owner] Malih Al Basti, it’s nice he’s got a good horse. I really thought he was my banker at the end of the week.”

Trainer Robert Cowell took home his first Stewards’ Cup win, and said: “We knew he was good. It’s easy to say afterwards but we were never confident, just very hopeful.

“We think he’s stakes class and Hughesie said so in his [Racing Post] column today. It’s very tough to win a race like this but we think he is pretty useful and he has shown it today. He has all the right attributes to go far.”

Bookmakers were impressed by Intrinsic’s performance, slashing the four year-old’s price for his next outing. He has dropped from 40-1 to 12-1 for the Sprint Cup at Haydock next month with Bet365 Bet365.

Trainers of second and third place finishers Ninjago and Alben Star were equally pleased with their runs. Richard Hannon, trainer of Ninjago, said: “Ours ran a cracker, he’s a lovely horse for these big handicaps and I’m sure there’ll be another for him at York.”

While Richard Fahey, trainer of Alben Star who was beaten by just a neck into third, said: “He’s such a good, hardy horse, a proper tough handicapper. I’ve been wanting to give him a break for a while, he was on the go all through the winter, but he keeps coming out and doing lifetime bests.

“Fourth in the Wokingham, now third in this. I’m sure there’ll be one of these big handicaps in him one day.”
